You will be learning the basics of traditional water gilding, as you make your own Christmas decorations. Gilding is the method used to glue precious metals, such as copper and gold, to different surfaces. Water gilding, which you will be learning, is the original method, and whilst more complex than modern techniques, it achieves a smoother, mirror finish. Perfect for reflecting those fairy lights! There will be copper, silver and gold leaf available to choose from* as well as festive snacks and drinks to keep us going. There is lunch available, at a cost of £5 per day, provided by the fabulous Hazelmere Tea House from Grange-over-Sands. If you prefer, you are more than welcome to bring your own lunch. Please make us aware of any dietary requirements at the time of booking.
*Genuine gold leaf is available but at an extra cost of £1 a sheet to be paid on the day.
Dates for 2019 are still to be finalised, but our 2018 workshops were a huge success and here's some of the feedback we received:
"I enjoyed your recent workshop on capturing atmosphere and found it unexpectedly helpful. Coming along with the idea that I'd be taught studio technique I was confronted by the realisation that the use of plein air sketching has been woefully lacking in my practice. Your guidance and example of engaging with the subject and transferring observation onto paper using sketching, noting response and clues about texture and colour was inspiring. I left with a determination to do nothing but sketch plein air in the immediate future to make sure this is thoroughly embedded in my practice and my confidence grows and also to work directly from sketches rather than photographs in the studio - you have inspired a hope that I can capture atmosphere much more effectively. Your studio and its environs is beautiful and the lunch went down very well - this alongside the conversation around our subject for the day was very enjoyable and helpful."
"Jess’s ‘capturing atmosphere’ workshop has been an absolute delight to participate in. Jess has such a lovely personable and knowledgable way of teaching and aiding individual expression without restricting ones own artistic interpretations."
